Project ROTCUT presented at Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference in Baltimore, USA

Autor: Ondrej Dvoracek

The field of wood mechanics and associated computational modelling offers much to explore and learn. Therefore, the Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference 2022, organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers, also hosted a mini-symposium about Mechanics of Wood and Wood-Based Materials. Wood K plus could not miss such a leading event! Therefore, Ondrej Dvoracek from Area 4 presented his multiparametric force prediction models (Fig. 3).

The conference took place from May 30 to June 3, 2022, in the attractive location of Johns Hopkins University (Fig. 1), Baltimore, USA. The conference hosted more than 1000 participants from many countries. Speakers were from renowned universities as well as from famous engineering institutions.

Ondrej’s presentation under the name Multiparametric Cutting Force Prediction Model for Various Wood Species gave listeners state-of-the-art information about current trends in wood cutting forces measuring and prediction. It showed them the most precise possibility of insight into the process by means of our facility in Tulln. There were also, for the first time, revealed cutting force prediction models (Fig. 2) for Locust (Robinie/Trnovník akát), Oak (Eiche/Dub), Beech (Buche/Buk), Tree of Heaven (Götterbaum/Pajasan), Paulownia (Blauglocke/Pavlovnie), and Spruce (Fichte/Smrk). He also demonstrated that the cutting model can be used by industry professionals and other scientists when it is incorporated into the application and shared open-source online (ondrejdvoracek.github.io).

The conference contribution was supported by project ROTCUT (ATCZ276), financed by Interreg V-A AT/CZ and co-financed by the Lower Austria Provincial Government.
